The Battle for the Kingdom

Genre: Fantasy

Logline: A hopelessly romantic teenage girl and her rebellious brother become characters in a video game. The girl, hoping that by marrying a prince, her romantic fantasies will come true, must instead adjust to a world where good is constantly threatened by evil. The girl’s life is at stake when the girl’s jealous brother, egged on by the prince’s evil archnemesis, uses a forbidden computer program to kill the prince and overthrow his Kingdom.

Synopsis: Susie Harwood, 16, is a hopelessly romantic high school girl who shuts out her parents’ bickering and the fact that she is unable to have children, by escaping to a world of romance novels where she pictures herself as the Queen of Romance. Her brother, Matthew Harwood, 14, has a negative attitude toward life, brought on by his verbally abusive father who calls Matthew down all the time. Matthew is obsessed with death and violent video games, and always manages to ruin Susie’s chances of snagging her prince, her latest potential suitor being the shy William. One day, after Matthew’s dad grounds Matthew for writing a poem about death and destruction, Matthew is denied the privilege of playing his video games. Sympathetic, Susie gets an idea that she and Matthew will create their own video game called “The Battle for the Kingdom.”  It is about a teenage prince called Edward Maccabee who fights to retain his kingdom against his archrival, the evil Lord Holland.  Susie finds Edward more interesting than any of the boys at school, as she imbues his character with the qualities she wants in a boy.  Matthew, on the other hand, is attracted to Lord Holland’s evil ingenuity.

One night, when their parents are on the verge of divorce, Susie dreams that she and her brother are in the world of their video game.  After she comes face to face with the fact that her romantic notions of love are inaccurate, and that this world is constantly under threat, Susie becomes the bride of Edward Maccabee. Matthew, jealous that Edward and Susie have most of the power and prestige, listens to Lord Holland’s scheme to resurrect an old forbidden computer program which has the ability to either heal people, or to kill people at the touch of a button.  Before Matthew can find the hardware on which to run the program, Edward reveals to Susie that he has the only computer left in the land. Edward re-programs Susie’s DNA so she can conceive children. Shortly after, Edward and Susie announce they will become parents. Matthew, jealous of Edward’s power and Susie’s happiness, finds Edward’s computer. Matthew deletes Edward, killing him. Lord Holland and Matthew rule the kingdom. Little does Matthew know that Susie’s code is inextricably bound up with Edward’s code. Susie is banished to a desert, where she will die within a few hours, and so will her unborn child.  Just in time, Matthew repents of killing Edward and restores his code. Matthew, Susie, Edward and their guardians save the Kingdom from the evil Lord Holland and his warlocks.
